Backing those who serve: Cash boost for veterans as flagship Armed Forces Hub receives funding boost

Comments Off on Backing those who serve: Cash boost for veterans as flagship Armed Forces Hub receives funding boost

More veterans, serving personnel and military families across North Lincolnshire are set to benefit from enhanced support, advice and community connections as additional funding is invested in the area’s Armed Forces Hub.

The investment will help expand the hub’s offer and develop new opportunities for members of the Armed Forces community to access advice, support and activities.

The announcement comes as North Lincolnshire prepares to mark Armed Forces Week, with the Armed Forces flag being raised today (15 June) and the Armed Forces Festival taking place at Normanby Hall Country Park on Saturday 20 June.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This week is a chance for us to recognise the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community, it is also a chance to reiterate the promise we made to offer support – whatever that needs to be – to armed forces families all year round.

“This investment is further evidence of keeping that promise, it demonstrates that commitment in action. Through the hub we are helping veterans, serving personnel and military families access the support, advice and opportunities they need to remain connected to their communities.

“As we raise the Armed Forces flag and prepare to welcome thousands of people to the Armed Forces Festival at Normanby Hall, it is fitting that we can also announce further investment in services that support our Armed Forces community throughout the year – things we know matter.”

The additional investment, funded through the Crisis Resilience Fund, will help strengthen the hub’s long-term offer and build greater resilience into support services for the Armed Forces community. The funding will enable the team to develop new activities, expand partnerships and ensure support remains available for those who need it now and in the future.

Cllr Tim Mitchell, cabinet member for finance and efficiency, said: “This funding will help us build on a successful model that is already delivering real benefits for residents.

“The Armed Forces Hub brings together practical support, advice and community connections in one place. Investing in that approach means we can continue to deliver support where it is needed most and ensure our Armed Forces community receives the recognition and assistance it deserves.”

This investment forms part of North Lincolnshire Council’s wider commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, ensuring serving personnel, veterans and military families are not disadvantaged as a result of their service.

Alongside practical support, the council continues to invest in initiatives that recognise, celebrate and support the Armed Forces community throughout the year.

Cllr Elaine Marper, cabinet member for customer services, is the council’s Armed Forces Champion. She said: “Our Armed Forces Hub has become an important source of support and friendship for many people, helping them navigate challenges and connect with others who understand their experiences.

“This additional funding will allow us to develop the offer further and reach even more members of the Armed Forces community.

“As we come together during Armed Forces Week to celebrate and say thank you, this investment sends a clear message that North Lincolnshire values and supports its Armed Forces community not just during commemorative events, but every day of the year.”

North Lincolnshire Council is a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and holds the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award. The Armed Forces Hub works alongside a range of partners to provide support and opportunities for serving personnel, veterans and their families across North Lincolnshire.

Standing with those who serve: council retains Gold standard for backing Armed Forces

Comments Off on Standing with those who serve: council retains Gold standard for backing Armed Forces

North Lincolnshire Council has once again been awarded the Gold standard under the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme – the highest national recognition for organisations that actively support the Armed Forces community.

The reaccreditation recognises the council’s continued commitment to serving personnel, reservists, veterans, cadet force adult volunteers and military families across North Lincolnshire.

From additional paid leave for reservists and cadet force volunteers, to employment support for veterans transitioning into civilian life, the council has continued to strengthen its backing for those who serve the country.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Backing our Armed Forces is not something we do for show because it is fashionable – it is about recognising duty, service and sacrifice.

“We are proud of our military communities across North Lincolnshire and proud to stand behind the people who protect this country, whether they are currently serving, have served in the past, or support others through cadet and reserve forces.”

The Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award is the Ministry of Defence’s highest badge of honour for employers that go above and beyond in supporting defence personnel and the wider Armed Forces community.

North Lincolnshire Council first achieved Gold status in 2020 and has now successfully retained the accreditation following reassessment of its ongoing commitment and support.

Cllr Elaine Marper, cabinet member for customer services, is the council’s Armed Forces champion. She said: “This Gold award recognises real action, not warm words. Those who serve Britain should never be disadvantaged because of that service and we will continue to make sure North Lincolnshire is a place that supports them properly.

“At a time when people want to see pride in country, respect for service and practical support for veterans and military families, this demonstrates exactly where North Lincolnshire stands.”

The council is also a long-standing signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant, working alongside partners to ensure members of the Armed Forces community are treated fairly and face no disadvantage because of their service.

The award comes as preparations continue for this year’s Armed Forces Festival at Normanby Hall Country Park, which will place Armed Forces Day at the heart of a wider celebration of service, community and North Lincolnshire’s contribution to Britain’s national story.

Back on the road: mobile library returns to rural communities

Comments Off on Back on the road: mobile library returns to rural communities

North Lincolnshire’s mobile library is back on the road after extensive repairs and refurbishment work – keeping the much-loved service running safely and reliably for rural communities.

The loved vehicle has undergone a major overhaul, with extensive structural repairs – including a brand new floor – making sure it can continue delivering books, learning and support to residents.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Libraries matter and that includes making sure rural communities are not left behind.

“We continue to invest in libraries in North Lincolnshire at a time when many councils are cutting them back or closing them altogether – we do things differently here because we focus on the what is best for residents.

“We have promised to keep libraries open – and this mobile library is an important part of that wider commitment – bringing books, learning and services directly into communities in villages and market towns.”

The council has committed to buy a new electric mobile library however this refurbishment ensures residents continue to have access to books, learning and library services while the new one is built.

Every three weeks the mobile library visits dozens of communities, schools and neighbourhood stops across North Lincolnshire.

This includes Alkborough, Althorpe, Appleby, Barnetby, Barrow upon Humber, Belton, Bonby, Burringham, Burton upon Stather, Coleby, Dragonby, East Halton, East Lound, Eastoft, Flixborough, Garthorpe, Greetwell, Gunness, Gunthorpe, Hibaldstow, Holme, Howsham, Keadby, Kirmington, Luddington, New Holland, Normanby, North Killingholme, Risby, Roxby, Scawby, South Ferriby, South Killingholme, Thealby, Thornton Curtis, Ulceby, West Butterwick, West Halton, Westwoodside, Whitton, Winteringham, Wootton, Worlaby, Wrawby and Wroot,

It also calls at schools, mobile home parks and rural villages where access to services can be more limited. Routes operate across Mondays to Fridays on rotating three-weekly schedules.

Cllr Carl Sherwood, cabinet member for rural communities and market towns, said: “For many residents the mobile library is far more than a van delivering books. It is a regular community service that helps people stay connected, keeps children engaged with reading and learning, and supports residents who may struggle to travel further afield.

“It reaches communities right across North Lincolnshire every week and we know how valued it is by the people who use it.”

Libraries across North Lincolnshire now support residents with everything from borrowing books and accessing computers to community activities, study space and digital inclusion support, alongside initiatives such as the Imagination Library scheme which has gifted more than one million books to young children across the area.

Full mobile library route timetables and stopping points are available on the council’s website.

Armed Forces Festival needs you – community volunteers wanted for landmark event

Comments Off on Armed Forces Festival needs you – community volunteers wanted for landmark event

Organisers behind this year’s new Armed Forces Festival at Normanby Hall are calling on community groups, clubs and volunteers to help make the event a success.

From welcoming visitors and supporting family activities to helping keep the site clean and tidy throughout the day, there are a range of ways local people can get involved in one of the area’s biggest community events of the summer.

There is also an opportunity for groups to support the Veterans Hub during the festival by helping serve refreshments and providing a friendly face for veterans and visitors throughout the day.

To get involved email events@northlincs.gov.uk.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “North Lincolnshire has an incredible community spirit and we are lucky to have so many groups and volunteers who already make a huge contribution to life across our area.

“Events like this simply would not be possible without that support. Whether it’s helping visitors, supporting veterans or just lending a hand for a few hours, every contribution helps create something special for the whole community.”

The new-look festival will see Armed Forces Day at its heart, with parades, military displays, drill demonstrations, live music, living history performances, mini tank rides and family activities taking place across the grounds of Normanby Hall on Saturday 20 June.

The event will also highlight the Hall’s wartime history and the role rural communities played in supporting the war effort. Free entry, free parking and a free park and ride service from Scunthorpe Bus Station will be available throughout the day.

Cllr Elaine Marper, North Lincolnshire Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “We want this year’s Armed Forces Festival to be a huge success and a real community event that people feel proud to be part of.

“It will be a fantastic day celebrating our Armed Forces community while bringing together families, residents, veterans and visitors from across North Lincolnshire. Any group or volunteer who can help on the day will play an important part in making that happen.”
